Throughout my more than 40 years in New York City, I have seen how private-sector leaders can make a huge difference in the life of our city. Time and again, business leaders from organizations large and small have stepped up to help the city through a crisis - and to help strengthen everyday neighborhood life in all five boroughs. It is with this tradition in mind that I invite you to get involved with the city's latest - and biggest ever - service initiative, NYC Service.
NYC Service is a blueprint to increase civic engagement and volunteering in New York City. It aims to make it easier for individuals and companies to help tackle community and citywide challenges, and to focus that help where it is needed most. It is our goal to capitalize on New York's greatest asset - the love we all have for our city - and spread the spirit of service to every corner of every borough, at a time when many New Yorkers are struggling.
The NYC Service initiative contains a set of innovative new strategies and tools that will help bring together our city's businesses, nonprofits and volunteers. There will be opportunities for every type of civic-minded business - direct volunteering, partnerships, volunteer recruitment and more. There will also be recognition and media attention for those companies and individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty.
When I worked in the private sector, I found giving back to be an important element of creating a dynamic work environment that can attract and retain the top talent. And as mayor, I've had the privilege of seeing what an incredible impact service and philanthropy can have on people's lives. As you read more about NYC Service, I hope you will consider participating in some way - and encourage your employees and colleagues to participate, as well.
