About this initiative
Service in City Internships harnesses the talents and enthusiasm of the City’s summer interns to address the impact areas where New York City’s needs are greatest while showing youth the power of service.
Leading by example, all interns working in New York City government participate in service activities during their summer. Interns at each City agency work together to choose from the full range of NYC Service initiatives or design a project of their own.
Through their participation, summer interns are exposed to the diverse needs of the city and understand the power of service in meeting those needs. Service projects bring interns out of the office and into the field to serve in all of the five boroughs broadening their internship experience. Making service a part of what it means to be a City intern will encourage young people to incorporate service as a core part of their lives post-internship.
In the summer of 2011, NYC Service engaged more than 500 interns in service opportunities. Interns participated in helping at blood drives, senior centers, city parks, and beaches. This summer, NYC Service will continue to target interns' efforts to have a positive impact on the City.
