About this initiative
Summer of Service channels the power and enthusiasm of the city’s youth and introduces them to the rewards of service.
The Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), with the generous grant support of  the Neuberger Berman Foundation, and a partnership with NYC Service, created the Summer of Service initiative in the Summer of 2009 with the goal of engaging youth during the summer recess. Young people at community-based organizations across the 5 boroughs participate in service projects addressing an array of community needs.
Elementary-, middle- and high school-aged youth design and execute service projects – from start to finish – that will improve their neighborhoods, making it far more likely they will develop a lasting commitment to giving back. Organizations receive grants based on the ambition and innovation of the intended projects.
All Summer of Service events encourage community support and engage area residents. There is a celebratory component for each project at the conclusion of the summer.
