Michael R. Bloomberg
Mayor of New York City
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg proudly announces the new Mayor’s Service Fellowship, a 5–month program to promote civic engagement and the importance of community service in New York City public schools. The ideal candidate should hold at least Junior standing in an undergraduate program. Additionally, he/she should have a demonstrated commitment to public service.
Fellowship for Civic Engagement in Public Schools
The Mayor’s Service Fellows will support New York City’s 1,500 public schools to implement service initiatives during the upcoming school year, making New York City the only large school district in the nation with a system-wide service mandate.
Description
As part of NYC Service, Mayor Bloomberg is asking all New York City public school principals to increase service in their schools during the upcoming school year. Mayor’s Fellows are essential to helping our schools realize their goals. Fellows will work with the Department of Education and public school principals to highlight civic engagement, promote service learning curriculum, and track service participation. The goal is to ensure that the next generation of New Yorkers grows up learning to serve and seeing service as a core part of what it means to be a New Yorker.
Fellows will support this initiative in a number of ways including exploring a range of service options for students, tracking school service data, and contributing to the initiative’s final end-of-year report. All Fellows will receive comprehensive training prior to their placement.
Program Details
The Fellowship is a five-month commitment from February to June. Training for the program will begin in February and Fellows will begin their placement in schools the soon there after. Fellows must hold at least Junior standing in an undergraduate program.
After the five months of service, Fellows will receive a $1,000 education award from the Corporation for National and Community Service.
