Volunteer opportunity description

HarborLAB seeks volunteers to help our American Canoe Association certified kayaking instructors teach adults and mature teens (and a few kids) to kayak this winter so that they can join longer and more challenging environmental education tours across our estuary and watershed.

We need people to help with basic stuff like carrying boats, registering people who arrive and getting them to sign insurance waivers, stand in the pool to steady boats, and other such simple but important tasks. Those with kayaking experience can help reinforce lessons, and we welcome certified instructors to help teach!

So far our pool program is based in Queens (not at our listed address, but at pools operated by partnering organizations) but we hope to expand to Manhattan.

Requirements

  1. Ability to swim.
  2. Warm, welcoming, and encouraging spirit.
  3. Agreement to have name run through sex offenders registry.
  4. Some experience kayaking a plus but not required.
  5. Ability to lift at least 20 pounds.
