Volunteer opportunity description
PowerPlay NYC is a 501(c)(3) dedicated to educating and empowering girls through sports, teaching life skills such as teamwork, leadership, persistence and tolerance, and fostering self-confidence and self-esteem for life. PowerPlay programming focuses on teaching girls fundamental skills in a variety of sports so they become confident in their athletic abilities and enjoy playing. The PowerPlay program setting also provides a safe space for expression and discussion, creating an optimal environment for health, wellness and life skills learning activities. Our sports and life skills training programs provide girls in low-income, underserved communities the opportunity to:
(i) Experience the competence, confidence, and connectedness so critical to healthy adolescent development and
(ii) Learn and adopt healthy living habits.
You can volunteer with PowerPlay with our College Advisory Program. If you are someone who has went through the process of deciding on what colleges to apply to, wrote essays for those appplications and decided on a major or career interest, this could be the position for you.
As a college mentor you will help the PowerPlay High School Leadership Academy Juniors and Seniors with their college applications, get to know their interest and provide advice. You will be working one-on-one with the girls at our 44 Court Street Office.
We are looking for volunteers who have expertise in the following topics:
- college application process
- college essay/scholarship essay
- financial aid/FAFSA completion
- advising on school fit (reach/saftety/match)
- resumes and interviewing
This opportunity will be held the first Saturday of every month and you are required to serve a 2 hour shift. The shifts are:
- 10am - 12pm
- 12pm - 2pm
Type(s) of Mentoring:
One on one
- 18 years and up
- serve as a role model and assist students achieve his/her goals
