Learning for Life Health Literacy Volunteers
About this volunteer opportunity
Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center is looking for individuals who have an interest in sharing information that will empower patients to make informed health care decisions and improve health outcomes.
Health Literacy volunteers work with patients in a variety of settings through out the hospital – those with a diabetes diagnosis and/or kidney disease primarily.
The volunteer provides information sessions to groups and/or conducts one-on-one health literacy sessions. Health Literacy volunteers increase a patient’s skills in areas such as understanding appointment schedules, the basic of navigating nutrition labels, understanding information listed on a prescription label, and managing multiple medications. The Health Literacy volunteer also educates and empowers caregivers of those diagnosed with diabetes.
