Shelter volunteers needed!
About this volunteer opportunity
This is a pretty relaxed and homey church-beds program. A regular group of about 12 guys are dropped off each night to sleep in the church basement. We serve dinner and then relax and watch a movie. The final lights out is at 11pm, though most people are in bed by 10pm. The volunteers sleep on a cot just like everyone else, and wake up a little before 6am to set up the breakfast. The men are picked up around 6:30. After cleaning up after breakfast and sorting the linens, the volunteers are free to go-- this is usually done by 7am.
If this sounds like something you'd be interested in doing or if you have any further questions, please email the volunteer coordinator to set up a one night orientation before you make any commitment. Please be willing to make a regular overnight commitment-- our shelter is these men's home, and we are looking for volunteers who are trustworthy and dependable.
The first night potential volunteers are shown around, or "trained", by experienced volunteers; after that we discuss each volunteer's interests and possible schedule. Volunteering requires being able to come up and down a long flight of stairs to the church basement in which the shelter is located.
