Volunteer opportunity description
NYC °CoolRoofs is an exciting collaboration between NYC Service, the NYC Department of Buildings and the Community Environmental Center to promote and facilitate the cooling of New York City’s rooftops. Applying a reflective surface to a roof helps reduce cooling costs, cut energy usage and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Join us as we coat 1 million square feet of rooftop to make a greener, greater New York!
You can help make NYC °CoolRoofs a success in three different ways. You can volunteer to:
- Prepare rooftops by using brooms and power washers to clean the surface
- Coat rooftops with a reflective white membrane using rollers and paint brushes
- Supervise volunteers on the day of coating to ensure safety
The 2010 coating season is now over. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped us reach our goal of coating 1 million square feet - we did it!
If you would like to participate in NYC Cool Roofs next year, please send a message to the volunteer coordinator below expressing your interest. You will be contacted at the start of the 2011 coating season.

We need volunteers seven days a week, April through October, from 9am to 3pm. If you are over the age of 18 and in good health, you are eligible to volunteer. We ask that volunteers commit to a full day of coating, and we especially appreciate volunteers who can commit to seeing a roof through from start to finish (usually 3 days). We will provide training and no prior coating experience is necessary.
