Volunteer opportunity description
About Achievement First:Achievement First (AF) is a nonprofit public charter school management organization based in Brooklyn, NY and New Haven, Hartford and Bridgeport, CT.
The mission of the 22 Achievement First academies is to deliver on the promise of equal educational opportunity for all of America’s children. We believe that all children, regardless of race or economic status, can succeed if they have access to a great education. Achievement First schools will provide all our students with the academic and character skills they need to excel in top colleges, to succeed in a competitive world, and to serve as the next generation of leaders for our communities. Additional information is available at www.achievementfirst.org.
About the Achievement First Tutoring Program: The AF Tutoring Program is an intensive intervention aimed at helping struggling elementary, middle and high school students (grades 3-11) master fundamental math and reading skills, as well as SAT preparation. Volunteer tutors teach and mentor the same two to three students every week at a school in Brooklyn. Achievement First provides on-site program support as well as ongoing training opportunities for tutors. The program meets approximately three Saturdays/month and students receive over three hours of direct instruction each session. We operate on a semester schedule: our fall semester runs from early October to December and our spring semester runs from January to April.
Job Description: Achievement First is looking for passionate and committed volunteer tutors who share our belief that strong academic instruction can close the achievement gap and fundamentally change the trajectory of our students’ lives. Our schools work relentlessly to impart the academic and character skills necessary for every child to succeed in college and life.
