Volunteer opportunity description

Visit a senior or adult with a disability to help with the timely payment of monthly bills. Clients make all their own financial decisions, but need hands-on help with the bill paying tasks, such as:

  • organizing bills,
  • writing out checks for the client to sign,
  • balancing the checkbook
  • reconciling bank statements.

Schedule is flexible, arranged by the volunteer and client at their convenience.

Marian, 87, and her husband, Tomas, live independently on the Upper West Side.  Both are blind. The couple was matched with Mike, a young professional.  At the matching visit, Marian and Tomas revealed they had been victims of financial abuse.  A volunteer in their NORC project had taken advantage of Tomas’s recent hospitalization to drain their bank account. Every month, Mike helps pay bills. During the past year, Mike has flagged social work issues that led to Marian now receiving home care and Meals-on-Wheels, and getting Section 8 successfully recertified.

Multilingual volunteers (especially Spanish) welcome. Please contact . The Bill Payer Program is operated by Council of Senior Centers and Services of NYC, Inc. and is part of AARP Foundation, AARP's affiliated charity.
