Cornerstone Mentoring Program
About this volunteer opportunity
As part of the Young Men’s Initiative, the 25 Cornerstone programs located in the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) community centers will include mentoring activity as part of their programs. Mentors will support youth in fifth through ninth grades during the transitions from elementary to middle school and middle school to high school by cultivating positive personal relationships and community involvement.
We are recruiting mentors to serve at all 25 Cornerstones sites across the five boroughs. Mentors will be placed and begin training during the week of February 20, 2012.
Mentoring will take place in small groups. Mentors will be asked to commit to at least one and a half hours with their group each week for at least a five-month relationship. Mentors will meet with their group at the Cornerstone site or other agreed upon locations. Mentors will be trained on issues such as schedules, activities, principles of youth development, group dynamics, relationship building, handling crises, and reporting. Each Cornerstone site will have a mentoring program coordinator who will provide ongoing support to the mentors. Mentors must be 18 years of age or older and undergo screening to participate.
To express interest in this opportunity, please email Tracy Garcia (tgarcia@dycd.nyc.gov) and include your two site preferences, your availability (in terms of days and times), your email address and your phone number.
