Volunteer opportunity description

Girls Write Now is currently accepting applications for a volunteer or for-credit Development & Communications Intern for spring & summer 2012.

This intern will gain valuable experience with a fast-growing nationally recognized non-profit organization and also enhance his/her career opportunities in the literary and arts education professions, not to mention development and communications. Strong writers with a keen interest in literature, youth education, non-profit management, and women's issues will be positioned to work with seasoned development and communications professionals. Volunteers receive training and support, as well as frequent and constructive communication to ensure an educational and rewarding internship.

Summer internships run from May-August and require 12-16 in-office hours per week. Applicants who are interested in interning from summer through fall 2012 are strongly encouraged to apply.

Interns report directly to development and communications staff, assisting with key aspects of funder research, proposal drafting and packaging, outreach, and communications (written, email, and web), as well as day-to-day operations.

Girls Write Now (GWN) is the first organization in the United States to combine mentoring and writing instruction within the context of all-girl programming. Since 1998, GWN has given at-risk girls from New York City’s under-funded public high schools access to a supportive mentoring relationship, a safe space to share ideas, and an intergenerational writing community. Our rigorous selection process, respect for each relationship’s singularity, and integrated supports have led to rich, revelatory student writing across a variety of genres. Featured in The New York Times and on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, Girls Write Now has been distinguished by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities as one of the top 15 after-school arts and culture programs in the nation.
