Volunteer opportunity description

 Career Exploration, a component of Scholars at Work, will serve approximately 200 seniors at 8 New York City high schools .

Volunteers will play an integral role in facilitating job readiness and career awareness activities with students pursuing education related to the manufacturing and transportation industries.

Volunteers will assist a staff facilitator from the Workforce1 Industrial and Transportation Career Center in leading group activities with students including resume development and refinement, mock interview practice, job search guidance, articulating career pathways, and mentoring opportunities with professionals and industry experts.

Requirements

Volunteer Commitment

Volunteers will be assigned to a particular school and are expected to commit to two sessions during the month of  May 2013.

Volunteers will be assigned to a school according to availability and geographic convenience as much as possible. Both sessions will occur at the same time either during early morning (8-10 am), late morning (9am-11am), early afternoon (1:30-3:30pm), or late afternoon (2:30-4:30pm or 3:30-5:30pm) lasting approximately two hours each. 

 

Volunteer Training

To be an effective Career Exploration Coach, you will need to become familiar with the Career Exploration curriculum and objectives.

Volunteers must attend a mandatory volunteer orientation on one of the following dates: 

 

Lower Manhattan:

Tuesday April 16, 6-8:00 PM  

 

 

-or-

 

Jamaica, Queens:

Wednesday  April 17, 6-8:00 PM 

 

Who we're looking for:

Given the industry and employment services focus of Scholars at Work, we are particularly looking for volunteers with some or all of the following expertise:

 

Ø  Experience working in manufacturing, including:

 

o   construction, wholesale distribution, wholesale trade

 

Ø  Experience working in transportation, including:

 

o   aviation, ground transit, maritime, transportation support, truck transportation

 

Ø  Experience delivering employment services

 

Ø  Experience working in human resources

 

Ø  Employment or volunteer experience working with high school students, either in school  or community setting
