Volunteer opportunity description
Oriental bittersweet is an aggressive invader that threatens all vegetation levels of forested and open areas. It grows over other vegetation, completely covering it, and kills other plants by preventing photosynthesis, girdling, and uprooting by force of its massive weight.
We restore, protect and maintain native communities of plants to benefit current and future generations of people and wildlife in and around Van Cortlandt Park.
By 2015 we would have amended the wooded acreage as follows: seventy percent would be restored; invasive plants would constitute less than fifteen percent of the plant population; and a diversity of native plants would be established and in succession towards viable plant communities.
