Volunteer opportunity description

Free Arts NYC is a non-profit organization that provides under-served children and families with a unique combination of educational arts and mentoring programs that help them to foster the self-confidence and resiliency needed to realize their fullest potential.

We are currently seeking committed volunteers to serve as mentors in the Fall session of our 2012-2013 Weekly Mentor Program.

Through the Weekly Mentor Program, we partner with group homes, shelters, schools and community centers to bring creative arts programs directly to low income, homeless, abused and neglected children -- giving children the opportunity to express themselves in a supportive environment, to develop communication and trust, and to experience new levels of hope and creativity.

Led by a Professional Facilitator, small teams of volunteer mentors work with youth ages 6-13 at social service agencies and schools throughout New York City (the adult to child ratio is 1:2 or 1:3). Mentors use Free Arts NYC’s theme-based curricula to lead youth through creating and discussing visual art projects – helping them strengthen critical communication and social skills, and build positive relationships with peers and adults.
