Volunteer opportunity description
As part of its Mentoring for Achievement Initiative, NYC Service is collaborating with the Young Men's Initiative to assist in recruiting mentors. Located in 25 Cornerstones in New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) community centers, the collaboration will work to include mentoring activity as part of the Young Men's Initiative programs. Mentors will support youth in fifth through ninth grades during the transitions from elementary to middle school and middle school to high school by cultivating positive personal relationships and community involvement.
We are recruiting mentors to serve at Cornerstones sites in Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx and Queens. Use you blank for good! Become a Cornerstone Mentor!
The Young Men’s Initiative (YMI) Cornerstone Mentoring Program engages youth 10 to 15 years of age in constructive relationships with non-familial adults that seek to promote the leadership skills and successful academic transitions of participating youth. The mentoring program seeks to serve and match 300 mentees with 75 mentors. Housed within 25 Cornerstone Community Centers in New York City Housing Authority developments, Cornerstone Mentoring engages mentors and mentees in a range of activities inside and outside of the centers that promote bonding and exploration of themes focused on success, service to one’s community, and positive attitudes toward oneself and others.
Mentoring takes place in small groups at the Cornerstone site or other agreed upon locations. Mentors will be asked to commit to at least one and one-half hours (90 minutes) with his/her group each week for at least one year. Mentors will be trained on issues such as activities, schedules, principles of youth development, group dynamics, relationship building, crisis management, and reporting. Each Cornerstone site will have a mentoring program coordinator who will provide ongoing support. Mentor must be 18 years of age or older and will undergo screening and background checks. To express interest in this opportunity please contact Tracy Garcia at Tgarcia@dycd.nyc.gov and include a site preference, your availability (days & times), and your email address and phone number.
