Volunteer opportunity description

NOTE: No single volunteer need do all the sampling -- our water sampling manager can coordinate a team of alternating volunteers. So if you can do this only once a month or even less, we'll still be very grateful!

HarborLAB (www.harborlab.org) samples water from the East River in Hunters Point each week so that students can test for bacteria and metal pollutants under professors' supervision at CUNY LaGuardia Community College. These results are shared through a "citizen science" program coordinated by the NYC Water Trail Association and Riverkeeper. Results will help keep kids who join kayaking programs safer, and will help encourage ecological improvements.

Sample site: Gantry Plaza State Park in Hunters Point. We might add our Newtown Creek launch, also in Hunters Point.

Our water sampling manager will schedule sampling times depending on lab access (the water must be chilled and delivered within a certain timeframe).

The procedure is simple and we'll guide you through it, and there's an season-opening training session through the NYCWTA.

This is a great internship or community service opportunity. Gantry Plaza State Park and the labs are just a few minutes walk from mass transit.

Requirements

In case of accidental fall-ins, which haven't happened, volunteers must know how to swim short distances. Sampling is done from a dock.
