Description & History

Abraham House was founded in 1993 by Catholic prison chaplains and Baptist Department of Corrections officers in response to what they had witnessed through their work on Riker?s Island. To the founders, it seemed the prisons simply warehoused offenders, few opportunities for rehabilitation existed, and the jails were only creating better criminals. After completing their sentences offenders were ill-equipped to find a job that paid a living wage, and struggled to reconnect emotionally with their families and find some measure of respect in the community. Abraham House opened its doors as an alternative to incarceration program for offenders convicted of non-violent crimes. Today, it also offers services for hundreds of children and families of prisoners and ex-offenders from the greater New York area.
