Description & History

The Hindu Community Outreach (HCO) is a not for profit organization that provides social services, educational and cultural activities to community members without regard to religion, race, color, national origin, gender, age (except as mandated by law), disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, and marital or family life. HCO is a joint initiative of the Hindu Temple Society of North America and the Tandon Foundation.

The Hindu Temple in Queens has been providing social services, educational and cultural activities through donations from its devotees, and dedicated efforts of its volunteers, since its inception through the Ganesha Patasala, the Youth Group, and the Senior Center. A number of music, dance and other teachers also used the Hindu Temple as a base to educate the community in diverse areas.

Given the increasing demand from the community, it was decided to scale up the efforts substantially with dedicated resources. A leadership grant from the Tandon Foundation and from a few major donors and space provided by the Hindu Temple Society of NA have allowed us to aspire for a more focused, more far reaching community service effort, to show the caring side of Hinduism and its values.

This led to the formation of the Hindu Community Outreach, to focus the financial resources, programmed activities, and dedication of its volunteer efforts towards community enrichment with greater accountability.
