Organization Details
Our hands-on workshops have the following objectives: to develop art literacy and sensory awareness; to build self-confidence through self-expression; to encourage problem-solving, observation, critical thinking, and the imagination; to enhance academic lessons; to engage participants to a wide variety of artistic disciplines; and to encourage job skills.
DAT's workshops motivate our participants to become more active in the educational process and prepare them to engage in society. DAT's principal activities include: Parent/Child workshops, In-School/After-School/Summer Programs, GED Workshops, CreativeEDGE for youth, Senior Workshops, and Professional Development.
Founded at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in the early 1980s, DAT became a separate nonprofit arts education organization in 1987, providing hands-on programs to underserved communities, and focusing on children and their families. The programs are aimed at audiences who are often neglected and thus rarely benefit from the well-documented growth potential afforded by art education.
The DAT philosophy of art education emphasizes process over product; we believe that the greatest value to be gained from doing art is often the experience itself, which can be internalized and referenced in the future. This emphasis on the relationship between thinking and doing art allows students to develop invaluable tools for everyday living—imagination, observation, and creative problem-solving skills.
