Description & History

Performances Calpulli has performed in premiere venues in New York City and beyond including Carnegie Hall. The company hosts an annual performance season at Queens Theatre in the Park and is part of the Festival of Nations in Tennessee and Missouri. Artistic staff continually develop new works and maintain a rich repertoire capturing cherished Mexican images and traditions.

Educational Programming As a key compliment to its artistic efforts, Calpulli engages audiences from elementary schools to universities with programs that provide didactic information about Mexican culture and history through dance in a performance-based setting. The organization leads residencies, workshops, and continues to partner with numerous schools, libraries and community organizations to bring the enriching programs to their communities.

Community Outreach The award-winning children's dance program in Queens is the heart of the community programs offered by the organization. The donation-based program serves more than 50 children every Saturday (and additional days during the summer) with structured classes focused on movement fundamentals and regional Mexican dance.

Open rehearsals are offered to adult audiences who seek to explore the company's work and obtain training in its dance form.

Other community programs include the annual Mexico Vive Arts event and special projects like citywide workshops about the development of the new work "Tarahumara."
