Organization Details
Because of the bias and misrepresentation of issues in mainstream media, it is critical to include diverse perspectives in the process of making media. PTTV strives to increase awareness of how media can be used to affect social change. A public that can strategically and creatively use the media is necessary for a more equitable and healthy democracy.
Our archive includes over 330 programs. These programs analyze and critique mainstream media and dominant power structures in contemporary society. The productions often feature scholars, community activists, media critics, and journalists addressing the ideological assumptions of the mainstream media, as well as explore the opportunities and challenges for alternative media makers.
The process of planning, creating, managing, and distributing social justice documentary productions through PTTV?s collaborative skill-sharing model is unique in the media environment. Collective members gain valuable technical and organizational skills through hands-on experience in video production and non-profit and media arts organizational management. Collective members also work in partnerships with community organizations to provide video production skills and equipment to those who do not have regular access to these tools of communication. Often these productions are used to raise awareness about specific issues or advocate for a particular cause. Some Paper Tiger alumni go on to produce their own documentaries or work in community media and the media reform movement, while others become media artists, social justice activists, media scholars, and academics.
