WHITE WAVE Young Soon Kim Dance Company was founded in 1988. The company was primarily a performance group, creating and producing 47 repertory pieces over fourteen New York City Seasons and on national and international tours.

In 2001, WHITE WAVE established our John Ryan Theater, where Ms. Kim mounts her repertory and new works, and serves the dance community at large.

That same year, the company established our Festivals Project with our inaugural DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL, presented in conjunction with the d.u.m.b.o art under the bridge festival. The New York Times' John Rockwell cited this Festival as one of the city's key dance showcases, offering "varied performances for little or no cost on a single program." Our organization presents two other two annual large-scale productions: the WAVE RISING SERIES and COOL NEW YORK DANCE FESTIVAL: The WAVE RISING SERIES, lasting three weeks, showcases in-depth work by talented newcomers who shone in prior Festival seasons. It also serves as a NYC Season for more established artists who may not have the time or resources to produce one of their own. The 2009 the SERIES presented 19 rising and eminent companies featuring about 80 performers. The COOL NEW YORK DANCE FESTIVAL originated as a component of Cool New York, the City?s "arts and parks" winter celebration. It features about 60 dance companies in 19 performances, bringing a wide spectrum of national and international talents into the NYC spotlight.

Now established as a vital component of New York's contemporary dance scene, our organization's Festivals Project has presented to date over 950 choreographers and dance companies and over 5,000 performers to a total of more than 56,000 audience members. WHITE WAVE also serves as a resource to the dance community throughout the year: we rent our space to companies and dance-makers for rehearsals and performances at a deeply discounted rate. In addition, our Kids' Dance Program has been enthusiastically supported by local DUMBO residents.
