Description & History
Established in 1983, Samaritans is a non-religious, non-profit organization devoted to providing confidential emotional support to people who are in crisis.
To this end, Samaritans runs a confidential, 24-hour crisis response hotline staffed entirely by trained volunteers who provide emotional support to those who feel depressed, in crisis and/or suicidal.
The organization also runs support groups for those who have lost a loved one to suicide and a public education and awareness program for lay and professional caregivers and service providers focusing on effective crisis communications and crisis intervention.
