Description & History

Since inception, LP21 has been surrounded by a close knit group of cultural advocates, traditional arts practitioners and community organizers that have a strong affinity toward upholding the interests and integrity of the cultural arts in the Puerto Rican community in New York City.

All of LP21?s programs and services are enveloped by the ?Puerto Rican Music Project? ? an umbrella concept which was developed to create a cohesive and complementary structure of implementing our organizational goals within three correlated tiers? education, performance and preservation- that when managed together, promote the growth and proliferation of Puerto Rican musical traditions and cultural expressions.

Spefically, the LTRP includes: a) The Cultural Legacy Initiatives - Promoting a collective memory and appreciation of our oral traditions and its heroes b) Bomba & Plena for All: Arts Education Initiatives for Studetns of all ages and backgrounds - Safeguarding Bomba & Plena?s permanence by fostering talents & interests of new practitioners c) the Local Touring and Residncy Project - partnership and comprehensive audience development/expansion efforts: Ensuring & maintaining platforms for continued & widespread manifestations of cultural arts Several of LP21's community programs have been offered for over 20 years, and service thousands of Puerto Rican, Latino and low to middle income families in the NYC and tri-state area on a yearly basis.

As a performing ensemble,LP21 has toured in over 200 cities in two decades, breaking several barriers in the performance of traditional arts within international settings. Several prominent venues and international cities include: The Kremlin (former USSR), Carnegie Hall, The Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Cuba, Australia, Berlin, among countless others.
