Description & History

Over the last 37 years, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe has served as a home for groundbreaking works of innovative poetry, music, theater and visual arts.

A multicultural and multi-arts institution, the Cafe opens its arms to audiences, artists and students of all backgrounds; our extended community of regulars is a reflection of New York City's diverse population.

Allen Ginsberg called the Cafe "the most integrated place on the planet". The Nuyorican Poets Cafe's central mission is to champion artists who exist outside the mainstream. The Cafe prides itself on nurturing new work by established artists from every discipline imaginable and on giving voice to rising poets, actors, filmmakers and musicians who have not yet found a consistent haven for their work.

The Nuyorican Poets Cafe has championed the use of poetry and spoken word as means of social empowerment for minority and underprivileged artists.

The careers of Reg E. Gaines, Saul Williams, Edwin Torres, Sara Jones, Paul Beatty, Willie Perdomo, and Rosie Perez have been launched via the Cafe.

The Cafe?s Theater Program has won more than 30 Audelco Awards for excellence.

The Cafe?s Fifth Night screenplay series resulted in the production of 45 independent films; participants in this series included such notable performers as David Strathairn, Kevin Bacon and Stephen Lang.
