Organization Details
Espoir, Inc.
is a new organization formed to give support to current and former asylum-seekers by visiting them while they are being detained; helping them contact their friends, family and communities; providing access to needed social services and legal help; assisting with the transition into life in the United States; and furthering pub1lic awareness of human rights issues. After escaping human rights abuses in their home countries, asylum-seekers arrive in United States often to find themselves being detained by immigration authorities for not possessing the proper travel documents. They are then transported, sometimes in handcuffs and shackles, to jails and detention centers where they be held for months or years while their cases are pending. Often, they do not know why they are being held, or how immigration process works. They may be cut off from access to their family and friends, and they may have trouble communicating their needs because they do not speak English. Having already faced persecution in their own countries, they must face the added psychological trauma of being in detention.
