Description & History

The First Presbyterian Church works with Partnership for the Homeless (see Partnership's organization information) and the John Heuss House drop in center to host an overnight shelter for 10 men, November through April, Sunday through Friday nights.

Volunteers from St. Luke's In the Field provide food for the evening and morning snacks.

Ten homeless men are our guests each night at the shelter. They arrive by bus from John Heuss House after showering and eating, to sleep at First Church Sunday through Friday nights.

All men are carefully screened for health and behavioral problems and are over age 18. They receive assistance with medical treatment, substance and alcohol rehabilitation, job training, placement in permanent housing and other services from the qualified professional staff at the John Heuss House.

This group of organizations has been providing overnight housing for the past 15 years.

Though the shelter program continues to have dedicated volunteers who volunteer every year, it has an ongoing need to fill approximately 90 slots each month.
