Organization Details
GCCA was founded by concerned citizens who wanted to proactively help their struggling neighbors obtain a "better life". In the beginning, services included translation, bringing clients to doctors, and responding accordingly to clients' individual situations. Today, GCCA's programs have grown to meet a wide spectrum of needs in the Chinatown community. A total of 11,085 service units (person/visit) of education, healthcare, social and advocacy services were performed during FY 2007.
GCCA's original program model, Right Here, Right Now, utilizes connections between the organization's clients, supporters, and community partners. Everyone has the ability and means to contribute to GCCA's efforts.
Consultation and Aid
GCCA provides information, eligibility screening, application processing, referrals and advocacy to help clients obtain public benefits and social services. The staff also provides telephone reassurance and translation to ensure clients obtain needed services.
Medical and Healthcare
GCCA services include complimentary weekly massage therapy and acupuncture by a licensed doctor, the only organization offering such services in Chinatown. Medical doctors volunteer throughout the week conducting general check-ups and consultation. A Tai-chi instructor also works with clients weekly.
Adult Education
GCCA provides daily classes in English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL), Basic Education in the Native Language (BENL), computer training, and civics/citizenship classes. In addition to classes, GCCA offers individual instruction to prepare for the U.S. naturalization exam and assistance in the application process for citizenship.
Cultural and Recreational Activities
GCCA organizes and sponsors many free special events to commemorate holidays and celebrations. Birthday luncheons and traditional dim sum parties mark seniors' milestones. GCCA sponsors a yearly visit to its cemetery site in Linden, New Jersey with free food and chartered bus rides. Movies in Chinese and English are offered for both learning and entertainment.
An acupuncture, massage and Reiki/Chi Gong therapy clinic operates on-site at the GCCA every two weeks on Wednesday (7/21, 8/4, 8/18) from 10 AM-1 PM. Appointments can be made at (212)374-1311 and (212)888-6181. Free service is offered to low-income families and individuals.
