Organization Details
Project Angel Ministries, Inc. provides an array of social services to the Melrose and Gun Hill communities in the Bronx, as well as the East New York Section of Brooklyn.
Established in 1991 Providing programs for children/youth Spiritual support for incarcerated individuals and their families In 1991, Project Angel Ministries Inc. recognized that in the Melrose and Gun Hill sections of the Bronx, nearly 60% of all households were single parent homes. Of that 60%, nearly 40% had a parent who was incarcerated. Project Angel Ministries realized that in these homes that had an incarcerated parent, there were children with no gifts from that parent at Christmas. It was this obvious need that caused Project Angel Ministries to begin to participate in the Angel Tree Program, thus enabling those families to maintain essential family bonds and ties. Through this program, Project Angel Ministries has been able to give children a full and rewarding Christmas experience, as well as giving that incarcerated parent a sense of involvement in their child's life.
Project Angel also recognized in 1991, that many of those same children never experienced any life outside of the Gun Hill community. The creation of Project Angel Summer Camp Program (7 to 14 days during the summer) provides summer vacation for approximately 20 children, in an upstate New York camp resort. The camp exposes children, who would otherwise not be able to afford to have a real summer vacation with a rural experience, in a Christian atmosphere of learning, teaching, and fun.
In 1992, Project Angel Ministries began to provide a prison ministry to inmates throughout the state of New York, from Rikers Island prison to Woodbourne Correctional facility. Nearly 15% of the inmates involved in the prison ministry have gone on to become prison ministry volunteers.
Finally, in 1996, Project Angel Ministries began its youth program, which provides educational, recreational, and spiritual guidance to the youth of the community. With an annual enrollment of 100 children, ages 5 to 15, Project Angel Ministries has been a guiding light, and a beacon of hope to an otherwise dark and desolate area of the Bronx.
The constituents of Project Angel Ministries are the children of parents who are incarcerated, children of low-income households in the Melrose and Gun Hill sections of the Bronx, and East New York Brooklyn, and their caretakers. Project Angel Ministries believes that charity begins at home. Yet Project Angel Ministries has been known to go wherever the need for their services exists.
Of nearly 40% of the single parent households in the Melrose and Gun Hill sections of the Bronx that Project Angel Ministries serves, 85% of the children involved in the program have not fallen victim to the environment in which they live. This means that they have not been arrested, fallen victim to drug abuse, have completed high school, and 30% have gone on to college education. Nearly 15% of all inmates involved in the prison ministry have gone on to become Ministers throughout the city. The recidivism rate of those inmates returning back to jail, or prison, involved in the Project Angel prison ministry is down. Project Angel Ministries,Inc.
