Description & History

NAMI-NYC Metro offers practical support, useful education, comfort and understanding to those in the greater New York City area who suffer or have family members suffering from neurobiological disorders: primarily schizophrenia; bipolar disorder (manic-depression); depression; panic and anxiety disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorders; multiple diagnoses, including mentally ill, chemically addicted (MICA) consumers; and borderline personality disorders.

Founded in 1979, NAMI-NYC Metro is a grassroots, nonprofit, self-help, organization of family members and friends of the mentally ill, as well as people who suffer from mental illnesses themselves ("consumers"). NAMI-NYC Metro is one of the largest chapters of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) and the New York State Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI-NYS).
