Organization Details
What We Do: -Work to reduce the flood of illegal guns in New York State. -Collaborate with gun violence victims, community leaders, health care providers, law makers, law enforcement, and other state and national gun violence prevention organizations.
-Communicate regularly with local and state officials to encourage strategic use of technology and law enforcement resources. -Organize events and rallies to call attention to the problem and urge change. -Work with communities disproportionately impacted by gun violence.
-Provide speakers for concerned groups throughout New York State.
-Coordinate a high school program known as reACTION Gun Violence.
-Build chapters throughout New York State - New Yorkers Against Gun Violence was established in 1993 by mothers galvanized by the senseless shooting death of a teacher in Prospect Park. After the Long Island Railroad massacre in December 1993, A Nassau County chapter was started. In late 1996, a Westchester County chapter was formed in memory of an Eastchester police officer killed in the line of duty. In the fall of 1999 a Suffolk County chapter of New Yorker Against Gun Violence came into existence. Most recently, in the spring of 2000, a woman who had attended the Million Mom March started a chapter in Albany.
