Description & History

The NYAWC was founded in 1982 by a small group of volunteers from the Asian community.

Since that time, the Center has grown to more than 60 staff members fluent in 15 Asian languages.

Each year, we receive over 3,000 hotline calls and offer intensive counseling and advocacy assistance to more than 400 battered women and their children.

Current programs include: Emergency Shelter Program, with a total of 57 beds for women and their children; Shelter Alternatives: Fostering Empowerment (SAFE), serving victims of domestic violence from within their own communities; the Children?s Program, helping children overcome the trauma of witnessing violence; and Community Education/Outreach.
