The Share The Care? model was born when a group of twelve women (mostly strangers to each other) came together and stayed together for three and a half years to care for a mutual friend with terminal cancer. Over time they developed forms, ways of working and rotating systems so no one person had too much to do. Their experiences as led two of them, Sheila Warnock and the late Cappy Capossela, to document their techniques, systems and step-by-step instructions into the, Share The Care: How to Organize a Group for Someone Who is Seriously Ill, first published in 1995.
In 2002, Capossela was became ill and required the help of her own Share The Care? group over the last ten months of her life. In 2003, Sheila Warnock founded ShareTheCaregiving, Inc. as a registered charity to promote and educate people about the benefits of group caregiving. She revised the Share The Care book for a second edition in 2004.
