Description & History

MMPCIA is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit neighborhood preservation organization committed to ensuring the historic character and the revitalization in and around the Mount Morris Park Historic District. We believe that together, our united efforts can have a greater impact than the isolated individual or smaller group efforts.

Over the years, MMPCIA has been that irrepressible squeaky wheel. Now, we have turned a corner and are increasing our capacity to have an even greater impact on the revitalization and preservation issues of our community.

MMPCIA?s work to improve the quality of life for residents, encourage housing redevelopment, and cultivate economic growth, has contributed to a neighborhood attracting worldwide attention as one of the city?s most vital areas of development. Our successes include the following: ? We convinced NY State to close a neighborhood corrections facility which was recently developed into a luxury condominium building on Mount Morris Park. ? We blocked the demolition of nine brownstones on Mount Morris Park West formerly known as ?The Ruins?, which have been converted into architecturally acclaimed condominiums. ? We achieved landmark status for the last remaining NYC Fire Watchtower in Marcus Garvey Park (formerly known as Mount Morris Park). ? We conduct a tourism program designed to showcase Harlem?s architectural and historical landmarks as well as revitalize local businesses.
