Chelsea Opera was launched in 2004 on a shoe-string budget.
The founders had recognized the need for more performing opportunities in the city.
The production's success launched what has become one of the country's outstanding small opera companies, with nine fully staged productions.
In this short time, the company has earned favorable reviews from Opera News and The New York Times which most recently noted that. The company presents fully professional productions with committed singers and a proper orchestra. Rehearsals and some concerts are held at Christ and St. Stephen's Church. Opera productions are presented at St. Peter's Church in Chelsea.
