Organization Details
In 2002, Community Board 8 set up the East 86th Street Task Force to examine issues affecting the corridor and determine the need for an association to represent both merchants and residents.
The Task Force conducted a survey which determined that merchants and residents would welcome a group to represent concerns regarding quality of life issues, including congestion, beautification, sidewalk condition, security, signage, construction, vendors and sanitation.
As a result, the East 86th Street Merchants/Residents Association was created in September 2003, and became a 501c(3) nonprofit organization in 2006.
Members include residents, businesses and nonprofit organizations.
Current Projects: In 2008 the Association secured over $2.2 million to fund the implementation of a capital improvement program for East 86th Street.
The plan includes new Bishop Crooks lampposts; replacement of street elements, such as lampposts, trash cans, bicycle racks, benches, tree pits and trees.
The Historic Bishop?s Crook lamp posts have been installed along East 86th Street, between East End and 5th Avenue. This completes the first phase of our capital improvement plan.
We also work towards bringing the community together to solve issues affecting merchants and residents such as; community forums which allow elected officials, city agencies and the community to meet and discuss issues of concern. We serve as advocates/communicators, maintaining solid working relationships with elected officials so we are able to play a role in decisions affecting our area.
The Association continues to work on improving the appearance of the East 86th Street corridor in many ways. We hire contractors to clean sidewalks, remove garbage, remove graffiti and plant and maintain flower beds.
We are constantly seeking to improve the safety of our streets. To this end we lobbied for the removal of mailboxes, news boxes and illegal ATM machines that were impeding access. Additionally we have developed a safety and security plan and are working to put it in place.
