Description & History

The mission of the 17 Achievement First academies is to deliver on the promise of equal educational opportunity for all of America’s children. We believe that all children, regardless of race or economic status, can succeed if they have access to a great education. Achievement First schools will provide all our students with the academic and character skills they need to excel in top colleges, to succeed in a competitive world, and to serve as the next generation of leaders for our communities. About the Achievement First Tutoring Program: The AF Tutoring Program is an intensive intervention aimed at helping the lowest performing elementary and middle school students (grades 3-8) master fundamental math and reading skills. Tutors teach and mentor the same two to three students every week and develop a strong and enduring relationship. Achievement First provides on-site program support as well as ongoing training opportunities for tutors. The program meets approximately three Saturdays/month and students receive over three hours of direct instruction each session. We operate on a semester schedule: our fall semester runs from late September to early December and our spring semester runs from January to May. Our program is currently entering its fourth year and is continually expanding its reach and impact.
