Description & History
The mission of the school is to prepare every student to succeed in the college and career of their choice. Coney Island Prep is a school of firsts—it is the first public charter school in South Brooklyn, and the first public charter school to locate in a New York City Housing Authority housing development.
The school is also incredibly diverse: 38% of scholars are black or African American, 27% are Hispanic or Latino,16% are white, 2% are Asian, 8% are other, 76% of scholars live in poverty, 23% are special education scholars, 7% are English Language Learners.
After just one year, Coney Island Prep was rated the 2nd best charter school and the 3rd best middle school in all of New York City, based on the Department of Education’s annual progress report.
