Description & History
Founded in 1999, Ubuntu Education Fund is dedicated to providing vulnerable children and families in Port Elizabeth, South Africa with an empowering environment and access to services and opportunities. In 1998, a South African teacher, Banks Gwaxula, and an American college student, Jacob Lief, founded Ubuntu Education Fund to improve education and health for impoverished children in township communities. Today, our 75-person staff serves over 40,000 children, youth and adults with life-saving HIV services and essential educational resources. Ubuntu Education Fund has developed a comprehensive, people-centred response to address the unique needs of our community. Our integrated services include four programmes: Empowerment; HIV Prevention Outreach; Clinical Services; and Care and Support.
