Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and former Vice President Al Gore came to Long Island City to launch NYC Cool Roofs, an initiative to mobilize volunteers to coat the rooftops of participating buildings with reflective, white coating to reduce cooling costs, energy usage and greenhouse emissions.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former Vice President Al Gore visited the rooftop of the Long Island City YMCA on Thursday, September 24 to literally paint the town white to commence the start of NYC Cool Roofs, a partnership between the City and the non-profit Community Environmental Center, with the objective of keeping the city cool during the hot summers.

Mayor Bloomberg and former Vice President and founder of the Alliance for Climate Protection Al Gore today launched an NYC Service initiative, "NYC Cool Roofs," to mobilize volunteers to coat the rooftops of participating buildings with reflective, white coating to reduce cooling costs, energy usage and greenhouse emissions. The Mayor and former Vice President helped NYC Service volunteers coat the rooftop of the Long Island City YMCA in Queens.

Bloomberg, FDNY Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta and Chief Service Officer Diahann Billings-Burford today announced that NYC Service participants trained nearly 500 New Yorkers in life-saving CPR this weekend as a part of the City's recognition of the federal designation of September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Mullgrav, Chief Service Officer Diahann Billings-Burford, New York City Housing Authority Chairman John Rhea and New York Cares Executive Director Gary Bagley to work with volunteers participating in an NYC Service volunteer program called the “Summer of Service.”
