Volunteer Income Tax Preparer

Income tax preparation is my BLANK. I am an IRS-certified income tax preparer for Food Bank for New York City. During the 2011 tax season, I worked as a volunteer for Food Bank’s Tax Assistance Program in the Fordham section of the Bronx—my community.

My relationship with Food Bank began in 2004 when the organization was called Community Food and Resource Center. At that time, I was fortunate to be chosen to participate in an intensive Tax Academy sponsored by Food Bank, Northern Manhattan Improvement Council, and the Internal Revenue Service. The skills I learned have enabled me to prepare tax returns for low-to moderate-income families free of charge.

I love interacting with our clients, many of whom return year after year to take advantage of the services we provide. I try to demystify the tax preparation process so that they understand why they are getting a refund or, in some cases, why they owe additional taxes. In the future, I hope Food Bank will consider me for other volunteer services, including teaching income tax preparation. I love what I do and feel that I am making a meaningful contribution in my community.
