Not Just a Teacher

After graduating with a degree in Education and teaching for a year I decided to move to New York. Shortly after my arrival I was selected as a 2010-2011 NYC Civic Corps member. This opportunity provided me with an instant network within the City and the chance to get involved with various communities. Through this program, I was placed at iMentor as a Volunteer Coordinator to support the recruitment, training, and screening of mentors.

My initial reaction was not good. With my education background, I thought, “Why wasn’t I placed at a school or tutoring program?” However this thought didn’t last long once I started working at iMentor. As new tasks were given to me I learned that I was capable of doing something other than teaching. This was a real revelation because I had always thought that there was only one path for me. The NYC Civic Corps and iMentor showed me that real change happens when people from different backgrounds and experiences work together toward a common goal.

My background and experience is unique and valuable to New York City and that is why I Share my Blank each and every day!
