Michael Mahoney, NYC Civic Corps Member

Life’s been a variety show – I’ve been a geography researcher in Maine, a waiter in Quebec, a student in Sweden, a page in Washington D.C., a teacher in rural Japan, a journalist in Tokyo, and most recently, an editor in New York. When searching for my next adventure, I felt a need to make more of a difference in the world - specifically in New York. I wanted to engage my creative, publishing and interpersonal skills in a meaningful way. My search coincided with the launch of the New York City Civic Corps, which I was thrilled to discover. I saw the ad and applied the very same day.

The NYC Civic Corps sent me to work at United Way of NYC (UWNYC). UWNYC works to support NYC nonprofits dealing with income, education and health issues and runs a variety of initiatives to impact various sectors. I work primarily with BoardServeNYC, a newly-launched program that recruits and trains professionals to serve on the boards of NYC non-profit organizations.  I recruit professionals to serve as volunteer board members - professionals who, like me, have a strong desire to "give back."  (Visit www.BoardServeNYC.org to learn more about non-profit board service).

I’ve been very happy with my work so far, and my NYC Civic Corps year has been a great new chapter in my life. When I hear about the good work our board members are doing, it gives me a sense of fulfillment that I did not feel in my foodservice or publishing jobs.  Now, if I could only find a way to put those Swedish language skills to use!
