New Experiences
As a second year Civic Corps member I was in a unique position when I was placed at iMentor, a youth mentoring organization in the Financial District in lower Manhattan. This year I have been involved in the behind the scenes work that revolves around mentor recruitment, mentor training and screening. My initial start at iMentor was a bit intimidating. The organization is very well staffed with professionals who have very diverse backgrounds in employment as well as in life experiences.
Through all of the introductions to staff as well as being immersed into an office culture I was not accustomed to, I was always treated with respect and was presented with professional development opportunities that allowed me to grow as a person and adopted staff member. As this experience comes to an end, I look back at my time at iMentor with fond memories of all that I was involved in. What I enjoyed the most at my time at iMentor was the borough targeted recruitment campaign to increase our mentor capacity. I would travel to Harlem, Brooklyn and even host a meeting at the iMentor headquarters.
Through those experiences I built my public speaking capabilities and also my confidence to speak on behalf of iMentor. I am happy the opportunity presented itself for me to be part of such an amazing organization. I have gained valuable work credentials as well as a network of people who can be utilized during the next phase of my life as a professional inspired to make change happen in the public sector.
