About This Initiative

Middle school is a critical period for academic, social and emotional development and is therefore a major priority of the administration of Mayor Bill de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina. NYC Service has recruited volunteers to provide programming that sought to help students navigate this critical developmental stage. Designed in partnership with youth-focused nonprofits, the Department for Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and the NYC Department of Education (DOE), the Middle School After School Volunteer Initiative has utilized service as a strategy to foster academic success and life skills.
