Volunteer opportunity description

Position: Development Intern
Compensation: N/A, this is an unpaid internship
Type: Temporary, 14+ hours per week
Schedule: Applicants should be available to work 2 days per week in the office, Monday – Friday, between 10 AM and 5 PM (flexible).

About Us: Harlem Grown works to inspire youth to lead healthy and ambitious lives through mentorship and hands-on education in urban farming, sustainability, and nutrition.

Our Farms & Facilities: Harlem Grown operates ten urban farms including five school gardens, three soil based farms, and two hydroponic greenhouses. Our offices and properties are located between 122nd and 135th Street in Central & East Harlem, Manhattan.

Our Programs: Harlem Grown provides youth and community development programs focused on urban farming, wellness, and sustainability. Our youth-focused programs include intensive
school partnerships placing sustainability mentors in six public schools, as well as educational farm tours, summer camp, a Saturday enrichment program, and a workforce development
program for at-risk young adults. Our community development programs include volunteer service opportunities, wellness workshops, special events, commercial and community food scrap collection for composting, and fresh farm produce distribution to participants, volunteers, and neighborhood residents.

Job Overview: Harlem Grown seeks an organized go-getter to support the development team. The intern will report to the Development Director, and work closely with other key staff on fundraising and community engagement efforts.


  • Regularly update donor databases, including Bloomerang and MailChimp
  • Process donations and issue acknowledgment letters
  • Research potential funding opportunities
  • Assist with event planning, including the annual Gala, community events, and other fundraisers
  • Build and maintain relationships with donors including both corporate and individual
  • Work as a team member to support Harlem Grown initiatives and programs
  • Reinforce Harlem Grown’s values of honesty, respect, and responsibility



  • Excellent organizational, communication and project management skills

  • Personable, friendly, positive team player able to build relationships with key funders and supporters

  • Experience with various social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

  • Eager to learn more about youth development and food justice

  • Motivated, creative and punctual, able to work both independently and as part of a team

  • Flexibility to work overtime, during mornings, nights or weekends, and willingness to work outdoors in summer heat or cold spring mornings
