Volunteer opportunity description

During our Farm 2 Food Bank project, volunteers collect leftover produce and other food items donated by local farmers and help load the donated produce onto the truck to be delivered to one of Food Bank’s local member agencies and distributed to New Yorkers in need.

WHAT TO EXPECT: When you arrive at the market, head to 15th Street and Union Square West, and look for our orange and white Food Bank truck. You will be greeted by a Food Bank driver who will provide you with an orientation and support you in transporting the produce to the delivery truck. Volunteers will receive all necessary supplies including gloves and bags for collecting the produce. You may store small belongings in the truck cab during your shift -- however, please bring necessities only as space is very limited.

WHAT TO WEAR: We require all volunteers to wear closed-toed shoes. Our staff reserves the right to turn away or reassign volunteers not dressed appropriately for their shift. The Farm 2 Food Bank project is entirely outdoors and moves forward rain or shine, so please dress appropriately for the weather and be prepared to be on your feet throughout the shift.

WHEN: Our Farm 2 Food Bank project at Union Square takes place on Mondays and Fridays from 4:30pm to 6:30pm.

WHERE: This opportunity takes place at the Union Square Greenmarket. When you arrive at the market, head to the corner of 15th Street and Union Square West, and look for our orange and white Food Bank truck at the corner by the American Eagle store. (If you have difficulty locating the Food Bank truck, visit the GrowNYC tent for assistance.)

WHO: Volunteers age 13 and up are welcome! ***Volunteers must be able to lift 30 lbs.*** Minors ages 13-17 attending must bring a copy of our youth volunteer waiver and attend with a parent or guardian.

WHY: In New York State, millions of pounds of food is thrown out each year, while over 1.2 million New Yorkers struggle to feed themselves and their families. This project helps reduce food waste, support local farmers and greenmarkets, and ensure that more fresh produce ends up on the plates of New Yorkers who need it.
