Volunteer opportunity description

As a VolunteerTaxPreparer, you will prepare federal and state tax returns, and provide referrals to wrap-around services for people with low-to-moderate income. Our clients reflect the diversity of NYC: ages will range from young adults to senior citizens, they mave physical and cognitive disabilities, and may also have limited English proficiency. Also, there will be clients who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. Volunteers are needed in BSRC main location: 1368 Fulton St, Brooklyn, NY 11216 during the tax filing season January 21, 2020 - April 15, 2020.

Hours of Operation:

  • Monday - Thursday: 5:00PM-9:00PM
  • Friday (Seniors Only day): 10:00AM - 5:00PM
  • Saturday & Sunday: 9:00AM - 5:00PM

Don’t know that much about taxes? Don’t worry — you’ll have access to free online training, or you can choose a volunteer role that doesn’t require tax law certification such as Intake Staff. The hours are flexible, the training is free, and the time commitment is up to you.


Preparers must meet the requirements set forth by the IRS VITA/TCE standards https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-utl/fact-sheet-llt-online-courses-and-certification-tests.pdf. Candidtes, must have passed the Standard of Conduct Quiz & at least the Basic Tax Law Exam. All Volunteers are encouraged to pass the Advance Tax Law exam and speciality courses (Miltary, International, etc).
